For the second straight summer, Broadalbin-Perth Elementary School hosted Camp Invention, a nationally acclaimed STEM enrichment program, for district students entering kindergarten through grade 6.
Camp Invention provides opportunities for open-ended exploration of science, technology, engineering, and more. During each day of the program, which was held Aug. 8-12, children rotated through a variety of hands-on activities while collaborating with friends to think creatively and invent their own solutions to real-world challenges.
“Over the past two years, because of the pandemic, students have been lacking engagement with each other,” said junior high science teacher Emily Priamo. “But this program allows them to come together, and learn to give and take constructive feedback, as well as root for one another’s success.”
The 2022 version of Camp Invention offered many activities to get participating children thinking outside the box:
- “The Attic” — According to the Camp Invention website, invent.org/programs/camp-invention, through this activity, “campers find out how inventions have changed the way people create as they experiment with materials science, chemistry and art, and they learn how to manage emotions that can come with engaging in the creative process. They even build their own robotic artist to help them make awesome spin art!”
- “Robotic Aquatics” — in this activity, “children dive into ocean research and adopt their own aquatic animal! They use their decision-making skills to make design choices, patent new aquatic plants and create a symbiotic best friend for their animal. Then they develop a unique, bio-inspired invention and hook investors at the fish market!”
- “Marble Arcade” — According to the Camp Invention website, in this activity, “children zigzag through physics, engineering and gaming as they build a mega marble arcade! First, they use scientific principles like potential and kinetic energy to roll gaming spheres at different speeds. Then they boost their collaboration skills by working together to level up their designs through hands-on problem solving!”
- “Spacecation” — During this activity, “inspired by real space exploration, campers create Spacepacks and Astro-Arm devices to help them with gravity-defying cooking, glow-in-the-dark lunar discoveries and erupting ice volcanoes! Before returning to Earth, they mine an asteroid and collect data on how animals can hatch and grow in space.”
Broadalbin-Perth students had the opportunity to attend Camp Invention at BPES for $30 for the week. All materials were provided by the district.
