Parents of students in the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District are invited to participate in Parent University’s first event of the 2020-21 school year – a “Self Care” seminar to be held virtually 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 15 with special guest Julie Lapham, B-P’s district-wide mental health counselor.

Lapham will lead a discussion about the unique stresses that many parents are experiencing right now with tips on how to recognize and properly manage stress, while placing a priority on mental, physical and spiritual self care.
“Self care is something we often overlook, but it is a critical piece to the puzzle, especially for someone that is busy and stressed,” Lapham said. “In today’s fast-paced environment, many people struggle to find time for things like exercise, outdoor activities and down time, but the benefits truly are ten-fold.”
B-P school counselors Charla Simonson and Jennifer Grimmick oversee Parent University and its programming initiatives. After hearing Lapham give a similar seminar for B-P staff this fall, they knew it was the perfect topic for the first Parent University seminar of the year.
“It’s stressful enough being a parent in a ‘regular’ school year, but the pandemic has definitely added emotional complexities that no family is immune to,” Simonson said. “In these extraordinary times, we want our B-P parents to know that we are here to support them in any way possible.”

About Parent University:
Parent University is a community collaboration led by the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District. B-P partners with community agencies and organizations to offer free courses, family events and activities that will equip families with new or additional skills, knowledge, resources and the confidence to become full partners in their children’s education. The goal of Parent University is to increase parent involvement in B-P schools and empower parents to raise children who are successful in school and in life. Research has shown that parents can increase a child’s academic success through their involvement with schools and communities. Parental involvement improves student morale, attitudes, and academic achievement across all subject areas.
